Nedra Pickler: Lefty blogger anathema, turned hero

When I initially saw whose byline the “fact-checking” of Barack Obama’s statements was under, a tiny bell rang in my head. A quick visit to Google proved the bell correct:

Whew. And that’s just the first page of results.

Similar results at DKos, Firedoglake, and MyDD.

Ah, but yesterday Ms. Pickler redeemed herself, it seems. Jonathan Singer at MyDD:

There was a time when some Democrats would have given into the RNC’s demand, and as a result end up looking weak both on the issue (Afghanistan) and in general. But not so this time with Obama. Instead of cowering at the hands of the Republicans, the Obama campaign held its ground and was rewarded with a fact check by the Associated Press that showed that Obama was completely correct with his assessment of the situation in Afghanistan. Indeed, The Politico’s Richard Allen Greene, filling in for Ben Smith covering the Democratic White House aspirants for the coming couple of weeks, deems this a “win” for Obama.

What’s this, though? A fact check by “the AP”? No credit to Ms. Pickler?

Ah. Regardless, I’ll guarantee you the Pickler bashing will be mightily toned down on those sites — For a week or so, at least. Congratulations, Ms. Pickler, you’ve finally pleased the netroots.

h/t Glenn Reynolds, whose Pickler pointer set the bell in my head off.

  1. Just awful. It’s “completely correct” that we’re “just air-raiding villages and killing civilians?” That’s certainly NOT what the AP study, immensely flawed as it is, found. The sheer contempt for intellectual honesty there is breathtaking, not to mention the nasty characterization of our troops whom they claim to support.

Sigh. 2008 is going to be so, so ugly. The only lesson the nutroots learned from 2004 is that if you’re going to forge memos from 1971, take a few minutes on eBay to buy an old typewriter first.

  2. If Pickler picked a peck of pickled peppers, would Atrios still be dumb?

  3. Mheh. I mulled over several “peck of pickled peppers” references when I wrote this one, but couldn’t find one I was comfortable with.

  6. There is one thing I don’t understand about her article. The AP claims that around 500 civilians have been killed in Afghanistan through the end of July. This equates to about 2.3 civilians killed per day. Without questioning the validity of this number and the ratio of civilains killed by US forces vice those killed by the Taliban, this factoid is offered in support of a variant of Senator Obama’s thesis that too many civilians are being killed in Afghanistan because we don’t have enough troops there.

    Ok.

Yesterday, over 200 hundred civilians were killed in Iraq by Al Qaeda or related subhuman elements. In. One. Day. Does that mean we don’t have enough troops in Iraq?

  11. While interviewing Romney, Hannity played a video clip of Obama’s August 13 campaign appearance in Nashua, New Hampshire, during which Obama said, “We’ve got to get the job done there [in Afghanistan] and that requires us to have enough troops so that we’re not just air-raiding villages and killing civilians, which is causing enormous pressure over there.” During the interview with Mendell, Hannity referred to Obama’s purported “political missteps” and characterized Obama as “accusing” U.S. forces of “air-raiding villages and killing civilians.” However, U.S. airstrikes in Afghanistan — and accounts of resulting civilian casualties — have been widely reported in the media and have reportedly provoked criticism from Afghan President Hamid Karzai and a British commander stationed there. The Associated Press reported in a “Fact Check” responding to conservative attacks on Obama that “Western forces have been killing civilians at a faster rate than the insurgents.”
